Finding Your Consulate

The official directory of all Italian consulates and embassies worldwide is at esteri.it/it/servizi-consolari-e-visti/. The site lists every location with contact details, opening hours and specific services offered. Italy has diplomatic missions in more than 130 countries worldwide.

Making an Appointment

Most Italian consulates require prior appointment for visa applications and other services. Appointments are booked online through each consulate's specific booking system — usually linked from their individual page in the MRE portal. Some consulates in high-demand cities (New York, London, Miami) have waiting times of 2–6 weeks for non-urgent appointments.

💡 Book early. Do not plan to walk in. Consulate appointment slots fill up, especially in the summer months and around major holidays.

What to Bring

  • Appointment confirmation printout or email
  • All required documents for your specific request (visa application, passport renewal, etc.)
  • Originals AND photocopies of all documents
  • Correct payment method — most consulates only accept specific payment methods (check in advance)
  • Any previously issued Italian visas or documents if relevant

How Consulate Appointments Work

Arrive 10–15 minutes early. Consulate staff will review your documents and may ask questions about your travel plans or purpose of visit. For visa applications, you leave your documents and pay the fee — the visa is then mailed to you or made available for collection within the processing period.

Common Issues

  • Wrong appointment type — check carefully that you're booking the correct service
  • Missing apostille on criminal record or civil documents — apostille must be from the issuing country
  • Expired passport — Italian consulates cannot process visas for passports with less than 6 months validity
  • Incorrect photo format — must be recent, white background, 3x4cm, no glasses
