Naples
The Passionate South
Why Visit Naples?
Naples is Italy at full volume — loud, beautiful, chaotic and deeply, gloriously itself. This is where pizza was invented, where the National Archaeological Museum holds the greatest Roman art collection on earth, and where you can see Vesuvius looming over the bay from every street corner. It is also Italy's most misunderstood city. Beneath the surface chaos is a 2,800-year-old culture of extraordinary depth, warmth and creativity.
Naples is the gateway to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Herculaneum — but the city itself is as rewarding as any day trip. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Spaccanapoli straight street cuts the old city in two; walk it from end to end for the full Neapolitan experience.

Food & Drink
Must-try foods
- Pizza Margherita — the original. Invented in Naples in 1889. Wood-fired, simple and perfect. Go to Sorbillo or Di Matteo.
- Sfogliatella — shell-shaped flaky pastry filled with ricotta and citrus. For breakfast, standing at the counter.
- Fritto misto — mixed fried seafood and vegetables, served in paper cone from street stalls.
- Ragù napoletano — slow-cooked meat sauce that simmers for hours. Try it on rigatoni.
Must-try drinks
- Limoncello — lemon liqueur from the Amalfi coast lemons. Made properly, it is extraordinary.
- Espresso napoletano — the most intense espresso in Italy. Dark roast, small cup, drunk in one shot.
- Lacryma Christi — "Tears of Christ" — volcanic wine grown on Vesuvius slopes.
Day Trips
- Pompeii (45 min) — the essential Roman city. Take the Circumvesuviana, allow 3–4 hours inside.
- Amalfi Coast (2 hrs by SITA bus from Sorrento) — Positano, Ravello, Amalfi. Spectacular but crowded.
- Capri (45 min ferry) — the most glamorous island in Italy. Blue Grotto and Villa Jovis.
- Herculaneum (30 min) — smaller than Pompeii, better preserved, far fewer tourists.

Direct answers to what visitors ask us most.
Is Naples safe for tourists?+
Central tourist areas (Centro Storico, Spaccanapoli, Lungomare) are safe day and night. Avoid the Sanità district and Quartieri Spagnoli alleys after dark. Use licensed white taxis only — fake taxis outside Napoli Centrale are the #1 tourist scam.
How many days do you need in Naples?+
Two days in Naples + one day for Pompeii + one day for the Amalfi Coast = 4 days ideal. Pompeii is just 40 minutes by the Circumvesuviana train (€3.60 one way).
Is Naples worth visiting?+
Absolutely. Naples has the best pizza on earth (arguably), the finest Greco-Roman museum in the world (MANN), the closest access to Pompeii, Vesuvius and Capri, and authentic southern Italian life the north has polished away.
How do I get from Naples to Pompeii?+
Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale to Pompei Scavi. €3.60, 40 minutes, every 30 minutes. Get off at "Pompei Scavi — Villa dei Misteri" (NOT "Pompei"). Ticket entry to the site: €18.
Is Naples cheaper than Rome?+
Yes — about 15% cheaper overall. A good apartment in Chiaia costs €700–€1,100/month vs €900–€1,600 in Rome. Pizza margherita is €5–€8 vs €12 in Rome. Transport and coffee are similar.
Where do I eat the best pizza in Naples?+
Starita (L'Arenaccia), Di Matteo (Spaccanapoli), Pizzeria Gino Sorbillo (Via dei Tribunali), and the temple: L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele (since 1870, €5 Margherita or Marinara — cash only). Expect 30–90 min waits.
What is the best time to visit Naples?+
April to June and September to October. Naples is hot and humid in July–August but the Amalfi Coast ferries run more. Christmas is magical — the presepi (nativity) workshops on Via San Gregorio Armeno are world-famous.
Can I day trip to Capri from Naples?+
Yes — ferry from Molo Beverello takes 45 minutes (€22–€25 one way), and runs every 1–2 hours in season. For a day trip leave by 8am. The Blue Grotto (€18) is best in morning light.
