Cinque Terre
Five Villages on a Cliff
Why Visit Cinque Terre?
Cinque Terre is five villages — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore — clinging to steep cliffs above the Ligurian Sea. These UNESCO-listed terraces of coloured houses, vineyards and sheer rock faces are among the most photographed places in Europe. The villages are connected by a coastal trail, by boat, and by local train — all within a ribbon of 18 kilometres.
The Cinque Terre card covers trains between the villages and hiking trails. Base yourself in one village and explore the rest on foot or by train. Vernazza and Monterosso are the most visitor-friendly; Corniglia is the quietest; Manarola is the most photographed at sunset.

Getting Around
Food & Drink
Must-try foods
- Trofie al pesto — Ligurian fresh pasta with the region's most famous pesto. Made with Genoese basil — distinctly better than anywhere else.
- Focaccia Ligure — thinner and oilier than Florentine schiacciata. Best warm from the oven at 8am.
- Acciughe marinate — Ligurian marinated anchovies. Silver-bright, briny, extraordinary with white wine.
- Farinata — chickpea flour flatbread baked in a wood oven. Genoa's street food staple.
Must-try drinks
- Sciacchetrà — rare, sweet passito wine made from partially dried grapes on the Cinque Terre terraces. A local treasure.
- Vermentino — crisp, mineral Ligurian white wine. Perfect with anchovies and pesto.
- Limoncino — the Ligurian equivalent of limoncello. Gentler and slightly less sweet.
Day Trips
- Portofino (1 hr by boat from Monterosso) — the most glamorous small harbour in Italy. Pastel houses, yachts, excellent fish.
- Genoa (1.5 hr by train) — Italy's most underrated city. Labyrinthine medieval caruggi (alleys), the world's largest medieval port, extraordinary pesto.
- Lerici (30 min from La Spezia) — quieter, beautiful medieval castle and bay.
- Portovenere (30 min from La Spezia) — UNESCO-listed, Byron swam here from the castle.

Respuestas a las preguntas más comunes.
How many days do you need in Cinque Terre?+
Two nights minimum. Day 1: hike Vernazza–Monterosso and swim. Day 2: hike Manarola–Corniglia, Riomaggiore sunset boat tour. Add a 3rd day to explore lesser-visited Portovenere or the High Trail.
Which Cinque Terre village is best to stay in?+
Vernazza for the postcard harbour, Monterosso for the beach and variety, Manarola for sunset photos. Corniglia and Riomaggiore are quieter. La Spezia works as a cheaper base with 10-minute train access.
Is the Blue Trail open?+
Check the official Parco Nazionale site before arriving — trail sections close seasonally for repairs. Manarola–Corniglia (Via dell'Amore) reopens in 2026 after a decade of work. Vernazza–Monterosso is always the highlight.
How much does the Cinque Terre Card cost?+
€18.20/day for the combined Trail + Train card (unlimited 5-village train). €7.50 for the Trail only. Buy online at parconazionale5terre.it or at any village station.
Is Cinque Terre walkable?+
The villages themselves are tiny (10-minute strolls). Between villages, use the coastal Blue Trail (1.5–2 hours per section) or the 5-minute regional train. Cars are banned in the villages — leave your rental at La Spezia.
Are there beaches in Cinque Terre?+
Monterosso has the only real sandy beach (Fegina, free public sections + paid umbrellas). Vernazza has a small pebble cove. Manarola has a rocky swimming area with ladders. Nothing resembles a beach resort.
When is the best time to visit Cinque Terre?+
May–June and September are perfect. April can be wet, October sees boat services wind down. July–August is extremely crowded — trains jam-packed, trails one-way traffic. Avoid summer weekends.
Is Cinque Terre expensive?+
Mid-range: $160–$200/day. Luxury options are limited (Monterosso has the main 4-star hotels). Food is reasonable — seafood focaccia and trofie al pesto run €12–€18. The +15% regional surcharge vs Italian average reflects supply constraints.
